- In 1950, Nat ΓÇ£Sweetwater"
- Clifton made history as the
- first African-American
- player ever to be signed
- by an NBA team.
- Sweetwater got his nickname because he
- liked soft drinks but couldnΓÇÖt afford them, so
- he carried around a jar of water and sugar to
- drink. He also made sweet moves on the
- court.
-
- Sweetwater played basketball at Xavier
- University of Louisiana. At the time, no NBA
- team would sign a black player. One outlet
- for talented black players was the Harlem
- Globetrotters, who entertained fans by using
- fancy moves and amusing tricks in
- exhibition games throughout the world.
- Sweetwater became one of their stars.
